International Female Fight News Barbie, Phiri and More – A lot of female fight action took place in the Americas with both Argentina and Mexico leading the way over the weekend.

In the biggest match up Argentina’s Daniel “La Bonita” Bermudez defeated Mexican great Mariana “Barbie” Juarez in her hometown in a bantamweight fight. For more on this story read Felipe Leon’s account on this web site.

WBC bantamweight titlist Catherine Phiri finally made her first defense of the belt she took from Yazmin Rivas earlier this year near Tijuana, Mexico. Her first defense took place in her native Zambia where she demolished South Africa’s Gabisile Tshabalala in less than a round.

Altogether little action took place in Europe and Asia this week. Here are the results from around the world:

 

Argentina

In Junin, a flyweight battle saw Anahi Lopez (6-0-1) defeat Veronica Tesure (0-3-1) by unanimous decision after four rounds on Saturday Aug. 27. Lopez, 21, makes Junin her hometown.

In Buenos Aires, a super lightweight clash saw Natalia Reynoso (7-0-2) knock out Maria Guallan (0-1) in the first round on Saturday Aug. 27. Reynoso, 29, fights out of Campana, Argentina. Guallan, 29, fights out of Buenos Aires.

In Quilmes, former bantamweight champion Carolina Duer (19-3-1) won by technical knockout over Brazil’s Aline Scaranello (10-5) in the seventh round. Duer knocked down the Brazilian and was blasting her around when the Brazilian fighter’s corner tossed in the towel to save her from further punishment. Japan

In Kyoto, a super flyweight clash saw Tamao Ozawa (11-3) defeat Thailand’s Suda Chaimaroeng (0-2) by technical knockout in the fourth round on Wednesday Aug. 24. Ozawa is 31 and fights out of Kyoto. Also, Mari Ando (13-9) won by technical knockout of Yokkao Saenchaigym (0-1) in the first round of their minimum weight fight.

 

Mexico

In Mexico City, a bantamweight showdown saw Argentina’s Daniela Bermudez (21-3-2) defeat hometown girl Mariana Juarez (43-9-4) by unanimous decision. For more on this read story by Felipe Leon on this site. In another female bout, Jazmin Gonzalez (7-2) defeated Joselyn Reza (2-9-1) by decision after six three-minute rounds in a flyweight clash. Both fights took place on Saturday Aug. 27.

In Gomez Palacio, a super bantamweight contest for the vacant WBC International title saw Yazmin Rivas (35-9-1) defeat Jessica Gonzalez (7-3-1) by split decision after 10 rounds on Saturday Aug. 27. Rivas, 28, fights out of Torreon, Mexico and is the former WBC bantamweight world champion. Gonzalez, 28, fights out of Mexico City. It was a rematch between the two. Gonzalez had formerly defeated Rivas in 2013.

In Chiapas, a flyweight bout saw Montserrat Consospo (2-0) defeat Ana Bertha Hernandez (0-1) who was making her pro debut on Saturday Aug. 27.

Two female fights take place on Friday Sept. 2 in Los Reyes La Paz. First, Mari Rodriguez (0-0) and Erika Sanchez (0-1) battle in a four round flyweight contest. Second, Joselyn Casilla (0-0) and Guadalupe Parra (1-1) battle in another four round flyweight contest.

A bantamweight battle takes place on Saturday Sept. 3, between contenders Irma Garcia (14-1-1) and Ana Maria Lozano (12-4-1). The bout length has not been determined but takes place in Atizapan de Zaragoza, Mexico. Garcia is a former WBA bantamweight world titlist.

A super featherweight clash between Yareli Larios (7-0) and Perla Hernandez (10-8-3) takes place on Sat. Sept. 3. The 10-round bout takes place in Guadalajara. Also, a four-round bantamweight contest has been added pitting Alejandra Castillo (0-2) and Livier De La Cruz Munoz (0-7).

 

Switzerland

WBC silver bantamweight titlist Aniya Seki (30-3-2) defends against Alexandra Lazar (8-1) on Sat. Sept. 3 in Berne. Seki, 37, fights out of Berne but was born in Japan. She holds the GBU and WIBF bantamweight titles. Lazar, 20, fights out of Budapest, Hungary. The fight is set for 10 rounds.

 

USA

In Washington, Penn. a four-round welterweight bout saw Shianne Gist (1-0-1) and Jenna Thompson (1-0-1) fight to a draw on Saturday Aug. 27. Gist, 22, fights out of East Liverpool, Ohio. Thompson, 32, fights out of Toledo, Ohio.

In Indianapolis, a super welterweight battle saw Mary McGee (23-3, 12 Kos) stop Ebony Teague (0-7) at 13 seconds into round two on Friday Aug. 26. McGee, 29, formerly fought for the WBC lightweight world title and lives in Gary, Indiana.

In Philadelphia, a flyweight battle between Laurie Schiavo (0-0-1) and Marianne O’Leary (0-0-1) ended in a split draw after four rounds on Friday Aug. 26.

In Humble, Texas, a super lightweight clash saw Lucia Osegueda (8-1) win by majority decision over Jasmine Clarkson (2-7) after four rounds. The fight took place on Friday Aug. 26. Osegueda, 30, fights out of Baytown, Texas. Clarkson, 21, lives in Cedar Hill, Texas.

On Saturday Sept. 3, super lightweights Selina Barrios (0-0) and Amanda Garza (1-0) meet in a four round bout in San Antonio, Texas.

 

Zambia

In Lusaka, bantamweight champion Catherine Phiri (12-1) needed only one minute to successfully defend the WBC title and knock out South Africa’s Gabisile Tshabalala (9-2-1) on Saturday, Aug. 27. It was the first defense of the title she won against Yazmin Rivas in Mexico this past January. On the same card, Lolita Muzeya (10-0) beat Anisha Bashir (0-4) by decision after eight rounds in a welterweight match. Also, flyweight Barbra Banda (3-0) won by technical knockout of Mwenne Gembo (0-1) in the second round.
