Female Fight News for week of Jan. 9, 2017 – Few female fights took place in the past two weeks because of the holidays, but that’s all over now. Prepare for the biggest female fight in American history on Saturday when Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano faces Yazmin “La Rusita” Rivas on a televised championship fight.

Showtime Extreme will televise the Puerto Rican-Mexican war between Serrano and Rivas on Saturday Jan. 14. A female fight has not been shown on Showtime since 2009 and that was televised by accident when a male bout fell out. For the first time in decades a female fight takes center stage.

Not since Christy Martin fought has Showtime featured and promoted a female prize fight. That ends this Saturday. Don’t miss it.

In other parts of the world Japan continues to bring female fights to the public on a regular basis. Last year they really opened up the doors. Latin American countries like Argentina and Mexico are also dominating the boxing landscape with super talented female prizefighters such as Yesica Bopp, Marcela Acuna, Jessica Chavez and Mariana Juarez.

Will it be the American’s turn with the emergence of Serrano, Claressa Shields and Heather Hardy? And will it spread to other parts of the country?

It’s going to be an exciting 2017 for women’s boxing.

Argentina

On Saturday Jan. 13, in San Salvador de Jujuy, bantamweights Julieta Cardoza (9-0) and Cintia Gonzalez (3-4) meet in a six round contest. Cardoza, 22, fights out of Los Polvorines, Argentina but was born in Jujuy. Gonzalez, 34, fights out of Gonzalez Catan in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Japan

Yuko Henzan (2-6-4) and Chisa Tanaka (1-4-1) fought to a majority draw after a four round bantamweight fight on Sunday Jan. 8. The match took place in Okinawa.

Mexico

Erika Hernandez (2-0-1) defeated Noemi Rodriguez (0-2) by unanimous decision after a six round super lightweight bout on Friday Jan. 6. The match was held in Chaparaco, Michoacan. Also, Karina Mondragon (1-0) beat Elisa Sanchez (0-1) in a welterweight fight by decision.

USA

On Saturday Jan.14, super bantamweights Amanda Serrano (30-1-1, 23 Kos) of Puerto Rican descent and Mexico’s Yazmin Rivas (35-9-1, 10 Kos) meet in a 10 round bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Serrano, 28, will be defending the WBO title a few blocks from her home. Rivas, 28, is a two-time bantamweight world titlist from Torreon, Mexico who moved up in weight. On Saturday Jan. 14, lightweights Patricia Juarez (1-0) and Amorena Baca (0-0) clash in a four round bout in Denver, Colorado.
