Female Fight News for week of Jan. 16, 2017

By David A. Avila

A new year brought door busting attention as Brooklyn’s Amanda Serrano kept her WBO super bantamweight title and gained the WBC Diamond belt with her impressive win over Mexico’s Yazmin Rivas this past weekend.

It was the first time in years that a female bout was televised by Showtime and the performance by Serrano and Rivas let the American public discover what other countries around the world already knew: the women can indeed fight.

The doors are open for female boxing in the U.S.A. and now a spark of optimism seems to be lit. Around the country more females seem to be busy in the boxing gyms than in years before. Meanwhile the rest of the world continues to showcase women boxing on a consistent basis.

A number of big female bouts are looming such as Norway’s Cecilia Braekhus about to defend her numerous welterweight world titles against Sweden’s Karla Svensson in an epic Nordic battle in two weeks. Others like America’s two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields are getting set for battle in March. And Ireland’s Katie Taylor is looking to make her American debut soon.

All in all female boxing seems to be on the verge of eruption.
