Tiara Brown’s in Town and DiBella Signs Her, & Female Fight News

Female Fight News for May 21, 2018 Tiara Brown’s in Town

By David A. Avila

Tiara Brown won world and national titles in the amateur boxing world, defeated some of the toughest female boxers in the world, patrols as a police officer in one of the more rugged metropolitan cities in America.

So why do they call her Officer Friendly?

“I’m just always smiling I guess,” said Brown.

Brown has more to smile about. The Maryland-based prizefighter and Metro D.C. police officer signed a contract with DiBella Entertainment it was announced on Monday. Her next pro fight will be on June 30 in Washington D.C. It will be her first bout under the DiBella Entertainment banner.

“I’m glad he (Lou DiBella) saw fit that I can be signed and be a member of the DiBella family,” Brown (4-0, 2 KOs) said by telephone. “I’m excited to be a part of his team.”

DiBella Entertainment has signed numerous top notch female prizefighters in the past several years including Heather Hardy, Amanda Serrano, Shelly Vincent, Alicia Napoleon, Raquel Miller and others.

“She is a terrific talent and excellent fighter. Not a just pedestrian fighter she is a championship caliber woman fighter. She has an unbelievable story,” said Lou DiBella adding that it took only one conversation to decide on promoting her. “She spends her spare time training young kids, teens doing voluntary work. She is an amazing person. She is going to change women’s boxing.”

The past two years female prizefighting has taken a huge upswing after decades of being ignored by boxing promoters, television and the Olympics.

Brown, 29, who began boxing in 2001, had stayed in amateur boxing for two decades for various reasons including the possibility of participating in the Olympics.

When her weight class at 125 pound featherweight division was not included in the Olympics in 2012, it was a disappointing blow. But she continued amateur boxing where she won two world championships in the featherweight class and also several U.S. National titles. The final blow to leave occurred this year when close friend Raquel Miller departed from the U.S. Boxing team.

“I had won all the highest commendations at amateur level then my best friend Raquel Miller turned pro I had won everything I could. I thought it was time to step it up and turn professional,” said Brown who made her pro debut in September 2016.

The Fort Myers, Florida native now lives in Maryland and works in D.C. and has fought four times as a pro winning all four bouts and two by knockout.

D.C. and Boxing

While not boxing, Brown works for the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and has become an ambassador for youths and sports. She believes her boxing background and discipline has enabled her to do her job.

“As a boxer I’m very disciplined. Words don’t affect me. I don’t like getting violent or physical and I don’t feed into the social media,” said Brown who has worked with D.C. Police Department for three years. “I can control myself very well because I’m a boxer. Police officers wear their feelings on their shoulders and as a boxer you can’t do that.”

Brown also feels her Florida roots help too.

“Where I’m from in Florida is country like. It’s slow. Our traffic and DC traffic are two different things,” she said. “It’s very fast here in DC. But I’m still the same Florida person.”

Working in D.C. Metro Police has also gained her many fans among the police department and the youths she works with on a daily basis in gyms as a trainer.

When Brown finally decided to become a professional boxer it was difficult to leave her many friends in the amateur world.

“I just wasn’t ready. The reason or one thing I miss is traveling to all the other countries. I made so many friends that don’t live in America,” said Brown who has friends in Korea and in Eastern Europe through boxing.

Brown said those international friendships allowed her to not take anything for granted. Simple things like running water, tissue paper and freedom to choose your vocation are things Americans have that other countries do not.

“This is a choice for me to box. In some countries it is not a choice, you were born to do it and you do it every day. In other places they don’t get to see their families because they are training,” said Brown of boxers and athletes from other countries. “Here in the U.S. we have the passion we do it out of love for it.”

Brown loves boxing.

“What I love about boxing is it’s you and one other person standing across from you. They think they are better than you. Mano a mano people are going at it. I Iike it,” she says sharply. “I like combat sports. Boxing is a combat sport but it’s still art and it’s still beautiful.”

Brown’s in town and DiBella has her.
