D-Day for American Prizefighters and Female Fight News

Female Fight News June 4, 2018 D-Day for American Fighters

By David A. Avila

D-Day is approaching for women’s prizefighting in the month of June led by an invasion force that includes Claressa “T-Rex” Shields dropping to the middleweight division.

Seventy-four years ago, on June 6, the Allied Forces invaded Normandy Beach in France during World War 2 that led to ultimate victory in Europe. Will female prizefighting find similar success?

American female fighting forces begin unloading this week in Southern California and reach across to the other side of the States in New York and back, beginning Wednesday until the first week of July.

On the actual anniversary day of D-Day, two female fights take place at The Avalon in Hollywood as former world champion Louisa Hawton (7-1) meets Mexico’s Elvia Trevino (2-3) in a six round light flyweight fight. The 360 Promotions event also features Austria’s Elvina White (1-0) making her American debut in a four round super lightweight match with Mexico’s Annette Pabello. The fights will be streamed on the 360 Promotions Facebook page on Wednesday June 6 at 6 p.m.

Two days later on June 8, in the Chicago vicinity, Edith Ogoke (1-0) meets Sarah Curran (2-1) in a super welterweight clash at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

Second wave

It won’t be a phantom alarm when bantamweight sensation Adelaida “La Cobra” Ruiz (5-0) brings her heavy hands against Karla Valenzuela (3-17-3) in the main event in the Los Angeles area. An ally on the card will be Kazakhstan’s Aida Satybaldinova (3-0-1) and Pepper Dixon (0-0) in a lightweight skirmish at the Pacific Palms Resort in City of Industry on June 13. Plans to stream the event on Facebook are underway.

DiBella Entertainment brings popular Alicia Napoleon and Raquel Miller to the New York City area in separate bouts taking place on Friday June 21. Both could be possible foes for each other or any of the top contenders of the middleweight or super middleweight divisions including Shields in the very near future. Napoleon (9-1) faces Vashon Living (6-3) in an eight round middleweight clash and Raquel Miller (5-0) trades blows with Szilvia Szabados (17-11) in a six round middleweight fight. The two female bouts take place at 21 Broadway Boxing Card at Melrose Ballroom in Queens New York. Both are rated in the top 10. To view the entire fight card go to this link: http://live.dbe1.com/ where it can be seen for a small cost.

On Friday June 22, Shields (5-0) invades the middleweight division when she contests Hanna Gabriels (18-1-1) for the vacant IBF and WBA middleweight belts in Detroit, Michigan. Showtime will televise the Salita Promotions main event.

Shields, 23, the current super middleweight world champion, is dropping down a weight division and leads the fight card at Masonic Temple in Detroit. She will be accompanied by two other female bouts including WBC middleweight titlist Christina Hammer (22-0) meeting Tori Nelson (17-1-3); and Franchon Crews Dezurn (3-1) battling Crystal Byers (0-3) in a super middleweight fight. Salita Promotions just announced today that Hammer versus Nelson will also be televised by Showtime. Hopefully they show highlights of Crews fight too.

“I will give everything on June 22 against Hanna Gabriels to win a world title in my second weight division,” stated Shields during training camp. “Then I want Christina Hammer, so we can unify all the middleweight belts, and then my sights will be on getting to the 154-pound world title.”

Hammer’s fight with the shorter Nelson has just been added to Showtime coverage also.

“I spar with lots of shorter fighters, like Tori Nelson,” said Hammer of Nelson whose last fight was against Shields. “I guarantee that it will be much more explosive and impressive than Claressa Shields was against her.”

Wrapping up the three-day female fight scene will be Amanda Pavone (4-0) fighting Karen Dulin (3-14) in a featherweight six rounder at Gilford, New Hampshire on Saturday June 23.

Third wave

In Woodlawn, Maryland, two highly ranked boxers clash when Tyrieshia Douglas (13-1) and Helen Joseph (15-3-1) tangle on Friday June 29. The 10 round main event will take place in the flyweight division. Since moving to America Joseph has never fought below bantamweight and has competed as high as super featherweight. It will be a challenge for the native of Nigeria to compete with the speedy Douglas who is a true flyweight.

Rumors abound that Mikaela Mayer will be added to the Top Rank card on June 30 at Oklahoma City. So far nothing has been substantiated.

On same day, Kali Reis actually will fight Szilvia Szabados in Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn. in a fight set for three-minute rounds at welterweight on the Star Boxing card. Of course it depends on how she fares against Raquel Miller on June 21 in New York. A cut or injury would force Szabados off this card.

On July 6, at the Belasco Theater in downtown L.A., “Super Bad” Seniesa Estrada was added on the card last week by Golden Boy. Many have her targeted for a clash with Marlen Esparza by Thanksgiving. Esparza, the former 2012 Olympian medalist, recently was married and is set to fight in Cancun, Mexico on July 20th.

From June 6 to July 6th American forces take center stage again and again. Is this the beginning of a takeover by female prizefighting in the United States of America?
